After locking the doors at closing time, Derek confronted her in the back office. His face was dark with anger.
“Linda Cooper, I trusted you,” he said, his voice low and controlled. “Two days. That’s all I asked. And in that time you’ve managed to cost me a small fortune. How could you let this happen?”
Linda stood before him, her hands clasped tightly together, tears already welling in her eyes. “Derek… I’m so sorry,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I don’t know what happened. I got behind and everything spiralled. I feel absolutely terrible about it. Please… please don’t fire me. I really need this job. I’ll do anything to make it right.”
Derek stared at her for a long moment. “Anything?”
Linda nodded, a tear slipping down her cheek. “Yes… anything. I know I’ve let you down badly. I’m so ashamed of myself. Just tell me what I have to do.”
